850 years, the Velikie Luki

This is an commemorative stamp which commemorates the 850th anniversary of Velikie Luki first mention in 1166. From the 12th century, Luki was a part of the Novgorod Republic. It has been an important strategic position since the ancient times. There is an obelisk of glory in the city. It is in place of brotherly burial for the dead soldiers of the Great Luke 26 nationalities. This obelisk erected in honor of the officers and soldiers of the 3rd Shock Army of the Kalinin Front ,which included 8th Estonian Rifle Corps in WW2.
Velikie Luki is an industrial city. It is also notable for ballooning competitions, which are held in the town annually since 1996. Since 1999, the competitions are internationally recognized. You can see many hot balloons and an ascension cathedral built from 1752 to 1768 on the stamp.
